Vicepresident Lyndon B. Johnson's 1963 courtesy visit

On the 14th September 1963 I went to see my brother who then worked in the Royal Hotel building right in the centre of Copenhagen. In the reception area was a crowd of people and I asked a very nice-looking young woman "Hvad er det, der sker?" - But no, she did not speak Danish, so I asked again in English, and she told me that Lyndon B. Johnson was on his way. While waiting, we were talking about Denmark and what to see in Copenhagen.

Down came Vice President LBJ followed by a number of bodyguards - and headed right to ME! Ah, not to me but the woman I was talking with - his secretary! She laughed and introduced me briefly to LBJ who was relaxed before leaving to see the Danish Royal Family and also the Danish Prime-Minister Jens Otto Krag. What a surprise! And was she a cheater not telling me beforehand!

When they left I hurried to get hold of a small camera and outside got these blurred photos. Little would I know the dramatic events only two months later - 22nd November 1963 - when the horrible killing of President John F. Kennedy brought LBJ to Office.

In the 1960 President elections campaign LBJ was elected Vice President of the USA. In September he visited Denmark.
Heavily guarded by bodyguards leaning up the cadillac.
